"TIMOTHY'S TICKER"

Is Bright to Blame?

Timothy Murray lost his watch last week, and, as there were attached to It a gold chain' and a gold pendant, he reckoned that the lot was Worth £10. Like the man- who went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among, thieves, Timothy appears to have been metaphorically sprung up and choked. Anyway, he got into doubtful company, and as a -result Benjamin Henry Bright was called upon to answer a charge of having unduly acquired Timothy's jewels. The case was heard before Magistrate Riddell on Wednes- •, day last. It appeared that Timothy" , had foregathered with two strangers , In a city hostelry; and after FREELY LUBRICATING HIS MACHINERY, r the three adjourned to Farish-s'treet. There was some sort of a mixed argument there, during which Timothy got a push from his new-found friends, which sent him up against the fence. However, the argument was philosophically concluded, and the trio wandered off down Wakefleld- street. After foing a little way, Timothy discoverttd that , ho had not got the time on him, and, raising a wild protest anent his missing horologue; one of his companions at once took to his heels and fled. Timothy, however, hung to the accused, who was the remaining man, and they wandered off towards Cuba- ' street. In the meantime, two men who bad witnessed the proceedings, followed them and saw Bright throw something over the fence into a vacant section near the public library.. One of the* two accosted the quarrelling couple, and suggested that they should all go to the police station and report •Timothy's loss. This Bright ultimately consented to do, though somewhat re- ' Juctantly, and the party repaired to the Taranaki- street Police Station. On the way they met Sergeant Martin, who accompanied them' to the station, and detained the accused, whilst he returned with the two witnesses to the Bectidn where* Bright had THROWN SOMETHING OVER THE FENCE. „-••• ' on searching they found a flve-dol-Jftr gold piece, which Murray identified £ the pendant from his *old chain. Brighfs accomplice, who tad put up ■Scfrd time m the Escape Stakes has pot been discovered or identified. In ihe meantime, Bright is held-- on- the charge,, and, pleading not guilty was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. _
