A Double Event
McKay's Mixed Missusek' Some people are not content with one experience,. even m the matter of matrimony, and instead of marrying m haste , and repenting at leisure prefer to take a double dose of the marital medicine. Such an one is Ernest Henry McKay, who appeared *.bef ore Magistrate Ridden, on Wednesday, charged with having gone through the ceremony of marriage with Pearl Catherine Chidgey, whilst, his legitimate donah, nee Ivy Alice Lafitte, was still alive. ; Chief-Detective Boddam prosecuted, and called the Registrar of Births,Deaths and Marriages, who produced COPIES. OF CERTIFICATES showing that McKay had married Ivy Lafitte m 1913, at New Lynn, Auckland, and had subsequently "Solomon- - ised" another marriage with Pearl Chidgey, at her father's house at St Albans, Christchurch. ' The evidence of the legitimate wife's mother supported this statement, and mother-in-law added that there waa one orange blossom, a boy of five, as a result of the union. . A sister of the object of his second effort* who was a witness of the bigamous ceremony, also gave evidence. The police constable who arrested him under warrant m Auckland said that when he accosted accused he had nothing to say at first, but on the way to the watch-house he said that h_ hadn't seen his wife for three year J. "This," he added, "places me m a funny ■•" position. I thought my wife had divorced me. I've got the other girl into trouble, and to save her honor I married her." When asked the statutory "Whaffor?" 'y '■' ACCUSED PLEADED GUILTY, and asked for bail, saying that the , c solicitor he had engaged had not ap- v.peared, and he did not understand his yy position. 'yy His Worship stood the case down until the solicitor could be secured. Ultimately Mr. Scott appeared for accused and pressed for bail, which was strong- ' ; ly opposed by the Chief 'Tec, who ; stated that he had the most sub- .'\ stantial reasons for objecting to bail, .-> but if it was granted he asked that vKit be. made very substantial. .\ His Worship declined to grant bail, > and -accused was committed to the 'f Supreme Court for sentence.
