MARS AND HIS MONEY.

A returned soldier who recently .landed In the Dominion with a nice little hundred pounds concealed m his socks appeared before Magistrate Riddell at the Wellington S.M. Court on Wednesday, charged with "painting the -town red," or words to that effect. According to the police evidence, the accused got full of juice and started to regard himself as "the crested jay hawk of the mountains," and "when I whoop no man squeals." In pursuance of this inebriated philosophy he sat down on the tramline m Cubastreet and announced his intention of pushing any tram off the line that dared to interfere with him while he slumbered. Fortunately he was hooked by the übiquitous "Johnop" before he could put this into operation. When (searched by the police his £100 was gone, and, Inspector Marsack saying a kindly word for him, the valiant.soldier was convicted and discharged with a few kindly words of warning from the Bench. .
