MANUNUI APPEAL CASE.
"Truth" has received a number of letters, together with clippings from the. "King Country Press," m .protest against.exemption from military service which has been granted by the Apoeal Board to Robert Patterson, an e\S?foye?of the Ellis Veneer Company It was stated that Mr. Patterson was the only man- m New Zealand who could work the lathe for ■ speojj ™ k w that the; veneer scale boards were now compulsory m cheese crates and the. company would probably make five XluSSf el th 6m P during ttocominj year Out of an original staff of 24 on?y two men were left, the others
having enlisted or had been balloted. Many of the men had been replaceed by girls, and others by okier men. The protests are from men who claim to Ua able to work the lathe, and it la contended that the appeal should have been heard m Taumarunui, instead oi Hamilton, when rebutting evidence would have been given. It is under- , stood that a re-hearing has been asked for by the Manunui branch of the Second Division -League.. Upon inquiries at the Defence Department the only infornjation given, to ."Truth" was I that the appeal 'in question- was lodged | by the managing director of the Ellis I Veneer Co., Ltd., of Hamilton, and m accordance with the usual practice lathe case of such appeals the application was sent to the Military Service Eoard operating m the ■ district from which the application emanated, namely, Auckland. . '
