BILLIARDS
(By "Spider.") A remarkable exhibition of billiards was given recently by Sergeant-Major Shaw, one of the heroes of Mons, who is now totally blind. His hearing has been so wonderfully developed that from the click of the balls he can follow the running round the table. During the course of the game he never touched a ball with his fingers, being: able to sense their positions. He actually made one break of 11. # # * A game was arranged recently at Wanganui between E. W. Warren, the New Zealand amateur champion, and C. Chavannes, the noted local amateur. They reached the 400 mark together, after which Chavannes showed the better form, the scores on time being Chavannes 829, Warren 639. Neither played up to reputation. Chavannes's best break waa 88, against Warren's CS. « '■ # * Frank Smith, sen., recently resigned the New South Wales championship m favor of Abotomey, who was at once challenged by Frank Smith, Jun., to play for £100 a-side. The match is now being arranged. • # # The British Billiard Association has for the first time held a snooker championship. Owing to 'the fictitious value placed on the different colored balls, the game has not been taken seriously by the authorities, who .considered * luck to be a greater factor than skill. The game is played so widely now, however, that possibly the New Zealand ruling body may consider a championship also. * • « • The Auckland Amateur Sports Club, who, as agents for the British Billiard' Association, control billiards i-in New Zealand, has recently had applications for reinstatement to the amateur ranks from ex-professionals.
