The Kennel And the Field

(By "Master McGrath." c/o P.O. Box 591, Dunedln.) The meeting at "Woodlands was a decided success, and the finals provided interesting sport. ' One Otago gentleman says the meeting -was the best he had •witnessed for some time. In all but two instances the hare got away. The two stakes were run at Mr. MeKercher's estate (Flemington). Mr. McKercher is a well-known coursing enthusiast and one of the few remaining of the good old school. He reserved the ground purely for the Woodlands Club, and was able to indicate bunny's every nest. There is a swamp running through the estate, and when ' the hare is raised it makes out on to beautiful paddocks, and the real game then ensues. The hares are right at home and make cover whenever they please. Viv. Jackson acted as marshal, Messrs. E. Price and Watty Brood as slippers, and H. Irving as judge. The , lady Red Cross workers had a booth on the ground and worked strenuously. There was a very good attendance of the general public, and many fair bunches of the gentler sex also viewed the spor.t. Following, are the results: Onward led Karry Pake four lengths, and turned twice; Harry Pake came m. for one, and drove to cover; Sunbeam led Oamaru Brick, who, however, succeeded m doing all the ' subsequent work. The hare escaped. Blue Moon won a one-sided course. Wait a Bit (being correctly namod) refused the chase. Quickstep a bye. Second round: .Onward led Oamaru Brick two lengths, and m a fairly even course the honors went to Onward. Quickstep and Blue Moon ran an' undecided. In the run off Blue Moon won all over. Final: Onward led Blue Moon a length, winning fairly easy. In the supplementary opening, Louisa led Johnnie Fake, but Fake eventually took command and turned out an easy winner. Sunbeam and Bird wood ran an undecided. In the run off the going was well contested, Sunbeam securing the flag. Oamaru Brick a bye. Second round: Sunbeam led Oamaru Brick two lengths, and m a good evenly contested course, Sunbeam was awarded the flag. In the final, Johnnie Fake gave Sunbeam any amount. Sunbeam led off' by two lengths and turned, then Fake took command, never once leaving the issue m doubt. He won easily.
