j (By "The Toff.") In a dash over seven furlongs Kimbolton^was of little use to Hylans, who is working exceptionally well at Riccarton. A mile and a quarter proved too far for Prenez Garde on Thursday of last week, and the Terrapin gelding stopped badly at the finish. A gallop worthy of mention was that accomplished by Majestikoff over seven furlongs on Thursday week. This mare is given a chance m the Winter Cup. The imported hors ; e Saxby la bowling .along satisfactorily at headquarters. W. McDonald has him looking very well. Charley outclassed Minesweeper m a spin over five furlongs on Thursday week but the latter was by no means disgraced and should be handy m a hack race at the National. Achilledes and Klmbolton gave a pleasir >£ display over three flights of hurdles on Thursday week. Art is m great heart, and promises to strip one of the fittest horses at the National fixture. . Though he has a very big weight ho is one of the best backed horses for the race. . Sleight-of-Hand is suffering from minor injuries, which he sustained on the trip from Wellington to Lyttelton. There is nothing serious the matter. ' Moddite, Meltchikoff and Notability have arrived at Riccarton to fulfil their engagements at the National fixture. Don Francisco will be difficult to dispose of m the National. The race he had at Timaru is expected to do him a power of good, Golden Prince will have to improve on all previous showings to see out a mile and a half over hurdle's. He does not act well m soft going. St. Cletus looks muscular and well and should not be long m breaking the ice. A minor hack hurdle race is well within hU» capabilities. Master Hamilton should experience little difficulty m beating the lot that will oppose him over two miles at South Canterbury. Moorabbe, who was well supported at Wellington, has a much easier field to down at Timaru. Looks like "Billy" Nidd winning a race. Belgian King is a likely customer and one that should be among the season's early winners. Rolling Tide is the most promising of the light-weights engaged m the South Canterbury Steeplechase. Though he may not be ready, Bore should be on the premises at Timaru. Kaupokonui is reported to have done a lot of work. 1 He is not confronted with a formidable task m the Hunt Cup Steeplechase at Timaru. Ardmore won very easily at Oamaru. Since then he has done a lot of attractive work, and that being so, he should be m the money at Timaru. Fleetham Is at home In heavy going. The course Is certain to be In a bad state at Timaru. John Barleycorn Is freely mentioned as a likely competitor at South Canterbury, where. -he should be knocking at the finish if he Is half himself. Winter Cherry and Telemon'were indulged In a sprint over four furlongs on Thursday of last week. Both acted pleasingly. Ascalaphus is moving very freely m his work, and promises to strip fit and well for next month's efforts. Point Blank, who showed signs of lameness about ten days ago, is on the mend.
