DINGOES SNARLING AT DARCY.

Putrid Penmen and Slimy Slanderers. Les Darcy, the boxer, must have hit some local folk either on the solar plexus or m the pocket, judging by the way they continue yelping and snarling at him, says the "Sydney Sportsman." While these denouncers of Darcy continue affirming that they are solely disgusted because Darcy did not enlist, it appears to us they are more concerned because he did not stay m Sydney, and continue to be a meal ticket fOr the . squealers and their : friends. 'If abstention from enlistment justifies their splenetic splashing of ink, and bitter bawlings about Darcy, there are thousands of local men they could deal with, just as unfairly, as they are dealing with Darey. The fact that taking on some of the looal, athome folk would mean a risk, either legal or lash, prevents these dingoes taking chances. This snarling and slandering of an absent man is quite dingo-like m its methods. The law of the land permits Darcy to be the custodian of his own life; but because he did not permit a bunch of noisy local jackals to order it at their sweet will, no abuse is too vulgar to be thrown at him. , His private affairs, his home life, and everything that good taste i and fair play holds sacred, are seized upon by these scavengers, and , given put broadcast to injure Darcy. On the Rdint of non-enlistment, Darcy is no better, nor worse, than tens of thousands of other citizens; then why should he be singled out for the abuse that is being given him? That Darcy is well-, balanced enough not to care a continental cuss about these coyotes Is probable, but still their, yelpings must fill with disgust every' fair-minded sport. The unfairness is all the more evident when it is remembered that it comes from those who slimed and slobered Darcy while he was money-spinning for the yelpers' josses. While he was here, and petted and pampered by the pnsh that is now crucifying him, his name never appeared m this page, either for censure or commendation. It is probable that if his erstwhile boomsters were not now playing the Judas act on him, that Darcy would never have found a protestor m these pages. The "Sportsman," however, always wants to be a bit with the bottom dog, when the dingo pack of the Fat Man is snapping at his heels. It may not be so pleasant or profitable, but it is our policy. . •
