The Deadhead's Diary
. Tom Curran, who will be remembered here with Johnny Sheridan, George Marlow, and with the Fullers, is now -leading man with the Thanhouser Company. That "the public is the wisest critic" as Charlie McMahon used to put on his picture ads. m Wellington, has once more been exemplified. Last week a Wellington continuous picture theatre took well on the way to £600. Needless to say it had' a sterling attraction in — but we ain't agoin' to split. ■' ■ ■ •■*:-. :: •■■ :s ._ ■ News to hand states ;that the J. C. Williamson Company has acquired the Australasian rights of the big Griffith spectacle, "Intolerance." The, particulars of the purchase .are not .yet published, but "Deadhead" opines it was the usual fifty-fifty. V J,C.W. wjll probably have to show it m the Dominion. :: :: :* New Zealand picture fans are now being catered for as never before. The film business is m the hands of a few strong firms, whose financial position and the big circuits they control, enable, them to bid for the cream of the world's film production . The benefit of this is being seen and admitted more and more every day. ::.. :: :': Harry Lauder's son, Captain John LauderJ has been killed m France. The captain was Harry's only child, and the Louder siller had made life's path rosy for" him. Just now Harry Louder is running a revue of his own at the Shaftesbury Theatre, London, where Fred Leslie and Ivy Shilling have made their, bow m the "Danse dv Vaurien." "La Boheme,'? which will star at the Empress, Wellington, on Saturday, is. worth its while for its faithful "pictures of the Latin Quarter of Paris . The later will be remembered by every New Zealand husband who has made the Paris trip., This is the place he went to see the night he left the wife at the hotel at her embroidery. ! '-* i: '."' :: The rumor that J,. D. Williams is going to inaugurate a film service m New Zealand seems to be true. Letters from America indicate that the film hiring branch of the business will be getting a jostle m the Dominion very shortly. Of course it might not be; "J.D." who is responsible, but he spoke of it just before he sailed for America. . The Vitagraph people have strengthened their caste enormously, and) some of the new releases will revive the old memories of this crowd when they were at the summit of things. Dorothy Kelly, m "The Law Decides," will be seen here shortly, and this is a film" which will go far to create the impression that ,the Vitagraph' Company has come back and found its long-lost punch. :s :: t: Billie Burke is liable to set the pyjama craze going m Wellington when she is seen' at Everybody's on Saturday next m "Peggy." She wears pink floral ones with frilly tops and bottoms and looks as pretty as a wedding qake.'and as demure as a violet.' The parson falls first barrel to Peggy m one of her own costumes — (again trousers) — which she wears ; to lift the; village toper's tot, and cure his thirst. t: :: JJ . Co-operation » is participation/ or words to that effect. Combination is incorporation which makes : the wise reflect. Amalgamation and co-opera-tion also mean a fusion. Does Co-op, and Combine reach the same conclusion i' The following rhymed-riddle has been fired at "Deadhead's" devoted head for solution. After wrastlin 1 with it, "Deadhead" has come to the conclusion that "an enemy hath done this thing." Julius Knight was to leave Australia for America this week. The once adorable Julius Superbus was observed mooning about outside a theatre the other night, looking as disconsolate as a perl shut but of Paradise, Some actors are like that; they live on limellglit. I Vera Pearce, of Tivoll Follies fame, : has caused a sensation . m Melbourne i with her new benzine waggon and a tiny chauffeur. The mo-car Is painted cream and black, and Is upholstered In grey and silver, and tho tiny ''shofor" Is the very last note of mag- | nificence, to match. Vora must be making a lot of splosh to run her own mo-car! However, perhaps she won It m a raffle, or perhaps her fairy godmother — like Cinderella's — presented it. Anyhpw. the sun of prosperity In shinIng on Vera. »» : J :s Tho J. C Williamson publicity department received something of a shock when tho new star, Florence Rockwell, expressed a desire not to be Interviewed. "It Is my opinion that tho personal sfde of an artist should not be brought out," explained Ml.ss Rockwell. "Tho stage side only concerns the public, and 1 don't know why they should bp Interesieil In our "private life any more than that of other people," Mlks Rockwell expressed similar sentiments to a newspaperman In New York once, and the result wus a special a rtlclti with bUr blaok headings.
