SOUTHERN SPORT.

OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND

JOTTINGS.

<<By "Al Primero.").

. The second day at Wingatui came off before a good crowd and under excellent weather conditions. Despite the heavy shower overnight, the track still maintained its hardness.

The Milburn Hurdles proved a good race. Bore, Parkwater, Oast Iron and Peerless going well for the most of way. Barkwatjer led to the turn but could hot shake off Bore, Peerless and Cast Iron. The finish between the last mentioned three was strenuously fought out, each of them looking "it" at times until Peerless, m the race home got cleverly out, and maintained her winning head past the post from Bore, with Coat Iron a head away third. Volsplel secured the Fernhlll Handicap apparently without much effort There were better horses than he m the race, but some of them were not troubling. Comely won the Allarton Welter with something to spare. She might have done better on the opening day but for a bad rim. Those m the know picked up something heavy over Comely's success. Ogier, maintained his usual role when In the St. Andrew's and gradually fell away. No doubt he will do things yet "like the thief m ;the night." Rorke's Drift was the favorite for this event. Favorably placed and weighted, however, Margerine sailed m nearly a length ahead of ; Ringform. Sister Regis a poor third. In the Taihoe Handicap, Bomb and Kazan fought out the finish, with Hot Air well m the running. Kazan got dear on a great sprint, winning by something over a length from Bomb, who just managed to secure second £lace from Hot Air. "'■ ' Sir Malt won the Grandstand event narrowly from Palisade, who had led solidly for a time. Golden King a good third. Kllrea won all through m the Juvenile event m which only three horses figured. V j It was not. a narrow thing for Sets?--burgh m, the Farewell Handicap, who Jed most of the way, but In the run home he was seriously challenged by Marabout, who, . however, got licked a length. Rodbwa finished a poor third. ■;'•."■ The tote turnover-for the two days amQunted;Uo ■ J283,f)58 10a, as Against £35,705 lOfJB for the equivalent meeting last season. . There are one or two jocks «tlll hungering for a license, but if general comment and obvious ixictlcs mean aught, there should bo a certain solid quartette out m the cruel cold as well. Something was expected from Sedd-fll-Bahr at Wingatui considering hla mooted ability. Ho Is among tho nominations for tho, Wellington Cup, j but If his performance at Wingatui I is any criterion' of his ability, he will bo beneath notice. Parkwater. looks promising. Palamon has got a long way to go > et - ■ -. ■
