Child Drowned m the Wasganui
, A Remarkable Rumor. An Aramoho correspondent recently wrote to "Truth" alleging, m the case of a little girl who fell into the Wong&nui River some few weeks ago and was drowned, that no one tried to rescue her. The body was taken out of the water an hour and a half later by the Aramoho police, convoyed to the homo ef the child's parents, and laid out without a doctor having been sent for. It was further alleged that half-an-hour later the body was seen to stretch, extent! Its arms and protrude its tongue. A doctor was thon «ent for, but he arrived too kito to restore life. In the circumstances it was asked whether the police had been negligent In not obtaining medical akill earlier? Inquiries In official quarters show that the constable at Aramoho proceeded to the locality immediately ho was Informed that tho UttJo girl had fallen into tho river, but there was then no sign of her, and no one could attempt a rescuo by going into tho water, wiiich was deep, muddy, and la strong current. Tho child hod been In tho water for nearly two hours before the body was recovered by means of a drag, and life was undoubtedly extinct then.
