"KURE-ALL" KUGELMAN

A QUACK AND HIS CORRESPONDENCE PLACED ON THE POSTAL BLACK LiSt Will Farther Action be Taken ?

It is clearly evident that the New Zealand authorities do not intend to take any chances with tho latest quack who hung out his shingle m this country, and who seemingly was Attracted from Sydney, or wherever his headquarters are situated, to New Zealand, which apparently offers, or seems to offer a fair field for exploitation. "Truth" refers to "ICure-all" Kugelman, who Impudently, used tho advertising space of the daily and other newspapers, and made the most Impertinent claims of being able to cure human ailments, and set forth that he alone could provide remedies, that others who professed to cure were, as ho adroitly put It, "Impostors" and that the. medical profession was littla better. , With a. rather intimate knowledge of the METHODS OF THIS CHARLATAN, "Truth" lost no time ia drawing tho attention of the authorities to the huge claims of this individual, and asked If he wad not infringing the excellent provisions of the Quackery Prevention Act, and it is ploaslntf to note that the Health Department soon Set out to lay this fellow by the hoels, and adopted the necessary precaution for preventing this man from using the advertising space of the dally newspapers. Not only was thla course adopted, with a promptitude, too, which speaks volumes for the Departmont of which Dr. Vallntlne is head, but the Minister of Customs placed Kugelman and all bis pills and potions on tho Customs black list, which meant, ot coarse, that the "cure-all" was prohibited from importing Into this country, his "famous" herbs aud preparations which wero to effect n revolution m the art of healing. Iv order to more EFFECTIVELY SQUELCH THIS INDIVIDUAL, it is ali»o pleasing to note that tho Postal authorities have acted, and 11. E. Kugelman has been placed on the Postal black list. \ln a "Cnaotto" notice recently issued, the Postmaster General Bets forth, that having reasonable ground for supposing that tho person mentioned tn tho Schedule, to wit, H. B. Kugelman, "is engnged In a fraudulent undertaking," It was there- ] upon ordered that no money-order, m j favor of tho said Kugelman should bo issued, and no postal packet addressed to the said person (either by his own or any fictitious or assumed name)

should be rsjjliitere<l. forwarded, or delivered by the post office of New Zealand. It can, therefore, be assumed that the business which this man Kucelman attempted to establish m New Zealand, not only m WeUlnKion, but elsewhere, Una been "settled/* but "Truth" feela that It U entitled to ask ono or two questions concerning this mtuL It i» known that he set binuieir up at the Grand Hotel, Wellington, and subsequently engaipsd room* m XHxon-etreot, and w© are very much afnUd that following on the publication of hi* preposterous proten»lon», that a number of suffering. and ml«---guided people got into tho hundu of thi* pretender. Wo nro l«d to believe Umt m one instance be w<u coneulurf by an Individual from a country dUtrlcc, who came to Wellington specially to consult Kuirelman, that he was examined by Kujrelman at the hotel In auft»tion, that Kugelroan exaujined him m the ORTHODOX MEDICAL MANNER, and pronounced him to be nufferiryy from a certain complaint, and professed or expressed bis determination to effect ft cure for an exceedingly Uu*o

sum of money. We understand that the man from the country paid a fairly large deposit, and received a certain number of bottles of so-called medicine. What we wont to know is, whether m thus examining the "patient" and genaraily adopting: the usual practice of the legally qualified medical practitioner, Kugelman IS NOT LEGALLY RESPONSIBLE? It is quite possible that a large numbej of people, attracted toy, and believing m Kugtjlruan's published assertions, have taken the man *vt his own valuation, and havo got into his hands, and have parted with their money. As tho authorities havo intervened and prevented Kugelmau from Jraportina his medicines, etc,' It- la ,only just that those who started negotiations with Kugclman should bo allowed the opportunity of setting back their money from this man, who, wo believe, is very wealthy. Ho has been "practising" his profession, uuoh as it ia for many years m different parts ot Australia, and his advertisements show that ho Is preparoiV to track his claims with all sorts of amounts. "Truth" trusts m tho interests of the people ■who have come m contact with Kugelman that tho authorities will see to it that a refund of tho moneys paid shall be made m each case. In connection with "Truth's" criticisms of, or animadversions on Kugelman and his methods, we have received the following letter from an individual who prefers to sign himself "Atatawhero," of Jackson's, via Greymouth, who takes up the CUDGELS ON BEHALF OF KUGELMAN. "Mat&whero" is a froquont letter writer to "Truth." though wo desiro to point out that very often hh» communications are not suitablo to these columns.* However, an exception is mado with his communication to "Truth" re Kugelrann, and the boat purpose will bo achieved by making it readable, and publishing the samo without comment, though it Is necessary to point out thut tho authorities, and not "Truth," concludod that Kugelman was a quack, and that his operations came within tho four corners of tho Quackery Prevontfon Act, a legislative enactment, which we bollevo is fully indorsed by tho sennlblo section of the community. "Alatttwhero's" lottor Is os follows: "I think that your paper adopts n very open minded view and nttttmlo on matters which it handles, and it ih always refreshing to road articles which are couched m such terms, but vr h«n you talk about thing* which you know absolutely nothing about nnd exhibit projmlice it makes one think that you aro getting as bad ns the "Daily Slobbers" that one sees nit over tho roimtry. What 1 want to Writo about is an article which appeared m your journal of iv recent date attacking Mr. 11. 12. Kugelmann In references to him styling himsolf a nose doctor. , You atoop to criticise his name u» beitip Qernmn. Well, what of that? I do not care if his nnmo la a cross between nil the pot-upa imaginable. A m\uu> is nothing', and a. person who Owe) la en such matters ia not tor removed from a school boy. Lot such snnttora go by and do not stimulate such prejudice. Illiteracy and childish hate which man- ' kind is overflowing with. I am v colonial myself from parents born ia London. I do not know Mr, Kugolmann from Adam, but from tho way it\ which ho explains every aspect of none trouble I think ho knows what ho i lit talking about. A quack will glvo you some concoction of no valuo at nn enormous price which is supposed to CURE YOU IN A NIOHT And ihtn ho Is gone, but this person Invites a legal agreement nnd ilOf.s not profesa to bo able to cure under about two yearn' treatment. Bo whnt could be fairer? I have a near relative who paid £1S to have her noso operated on and it would have done her more good to havo bought chocolates with (hut sum. For m placo of the nose bdnic clearer, tho nostril which wn« operated on Is blocked altogether, and .such \v<i:< not performed by a quack but by a "epeciatiAt," who Is very well known m one ol our institutions. Saying nodiing of tho time, etc., which I havo wasted myself (n having my now swn to, the only "benefit" which I hav<» received ban been to have my brent hint: Impaired and the only remedy for v poor man its (o fin Iff up wanning mxlv, which at the least give* relief. Of course, I know the ctiitrgei* ftr« very high, but then no specialist will look nr you undor £1 is a time. That Uoph not say that tho wild fro !» juaUllM), but It doss not way that it Ia any woneo In the caso undor dlxctuttflou. Now, nn to Mr. Kugelniann'o herbal rcnu'UloH. You have never used any of «iiine and tboroforo you did not know what you wuro taJklnf about. 1 put m we<*kn m bed ovory -winter with Influenza, but since I heard of KUQELWAN'H ELECTRIC ESBEJNCB I havo turaed that game up for by rubbing tht sftid rrrmpdy on my client 1 ««ut get cured m <v night, and if ihi»» gantlcunan's herbal .omodiee tire n fraud, how la It Umt ho ba/t laboraturi< h In different countries, and how hi it that 10a prepared ooap for the ftkltt m ho w«il Known Jn Auatralla?
