Michael Doyle had disobeyed a maintenance order for the support of his child, and by letting things slide thus had piled up for his future attention rather bulky arrears. As a consequence he was called upon for explanation by Sub-Inspector Broberg before Magistrate Bartholomew, S.M., last Friday. Mick said he was out of work, had been ailing, and had^ at the same time, to keep a house going, and support himself and a child that a Mrs. Murphy was looking after. Sub-Inspector Broberg said he had heard THE SAME EXCUSES before, so he would ask Mr. Doyle a lew questions. * Sub-Inspector: You say you've been out of work? — Yes, and am still. Besides, rm not feeling too well and cant take every work. But you said you were keeping your house, yourself and a child. How do you, manage that?— Mrs. Murphy Wokß after the child, and I give what I canY; I keep the child m .clothes. How much a week is that? — Five shillings. How much does it cost to keep yourself and the house? — Thirty shillings, about. • N You're managing that all right?— By an effort and with casual work. Do you run the house yourself?—' Tve a person who looks after ft. A person? — Yes, a housekeeper. Then, it amounts to this, that the State has to keep your child, while yon can afford the LUXURY OF A HOUSEKEEPER* ■<—. 11l pay when I can. But you can pay now, when you can keep a housekeeper, and you had bet-, ter try and do so. The case was adjourned for further Investigation, Mr. Doyle to pay m [£2 10s within the next month.
