SOUTHERN SPORT
OTAGO and SOUTHLAND JOTTINGS
(By "Al Primero.")
Dunedin Jockey Club's Initial mooting; of the season proved a (successful ono m every way. Wingutui whs lovely on Friday, but it was really bad on Saturday. Tho latter day was cur.sed by tho steadiest of heavy downpours; still, tho public attendance was very good under the clreumststnces.
Mr. A. J. Wood was m his usual good form at the barrier and started the events '■ well. Outside of Meltchlkoffs big dividend on the opening day, there were no good price* and first favorites predominated all the time. Tho track got very heavy on tho second day, but It made no diffarpneo to tho results.
It is difficult to measure up Palisade (or anything from his stable for tluit matter). Ho did badly m boch events, and is obviously unreliable. He was genuinely supported on both days.
Redshlre stopped badly In tho Guinea* and waa walking at the finish.
Klngsway scored a lucky run m the first hurdles through Crib falling. Owner O. N. McL*eon, who is at present m camp at Trentbam or elsewhere, also scored on tho same day with PyJama. It is getting a common thing for tbt! pair to win, and if one falls so doea tho othur.
Ilattle Eve foiled badly In , the Guineas and the Baronet appeared to bo thinking hurd.
Robort Hell Huppleinontod his kucco«s at Kurow by «coHntf In the EK'Ctric Handicap at Wlniratui. This might have been one of tho Dominion's most promising sprinters had ho been stfted with a better net of understandings. Tho race ho had on tho opening day and the heavy track on .Saturday, assisted Slbgan to win the big handicap much to the surprlao of Palinode's bttCkCTH.
Thesiius won tho two-year-old race on the bit. Don Pttelilco sha.pe<l badly.
