COURSING

And Kennel Notes (By "Master McGrath," c/o P.O. Box 691, Dunedin.) TO CORRESPONDENTS: • "W.H.S." (Pap.)— Thanks very much for your valuable note. Will be pleased to hear from you any time, and, as you are evidently, such a reliable aurity, you may have a lot to say that "Truth's" coursing fans' would like to read. Any suggestions or recollections you send I will use. Unfortunately, between the law, -the wowser, and a rotten Coursing Association, the game is obviously m a bad way. j The projected court case of the Association v. Sumpter has been dropped. A very wise proceeding. The Dunedin, Central Otago, and Invercarglll clubs I finally opposed going on with the case, and, using what little influence I had, I agreed with these clubs. If there had been -less letter .writing to, and publication given to the late Association secretary, he would have responded long ago. Even, as it Is, courting has not benefited m the least since leaving Mr. Sumpter's hands. To Mr. B. S. Irwin, the Dunedin president, is due the easy ending to au overdrawn wrangle. He spoke out fairly, and there were only two gentle- j men located who were eager to go on with the case. "Master McGrath" is very glad to be able to acknowledge that the. Association we possess have ruled that the recent Waterloo, at which Mr. Jackson's Beacon won, was run correctly. The matter occasioned a very weak debate among the few delegates present. There was no authority of any standing present, if we except Mr. Cfwen Keely, Gore. Owen went "tooth and nail" against "Master Mac's" opinion, and, to the satisfaction of the redoubtable, Watty Broad and the "Kegvillery" committee, Owen won. ; It is certainly very difficult to got some old coursers off the ancient beaten track, and to instil m them a smack of modernity. What was good enough for our' fathers should not necessarily be good enough for us. If the law of the land were to plod along on that method, men would be hanged every day for stealing sheep. That unlucky ''bobby" m Dunedin who pinched a nice leg of mutton would be swinging by the neck ere this for his theft, if our laws had not been evolutionary. "Master Mac." believes that there is much m coursing that should utterly be blotted out, and, rightly or wrongly, he is obsessed m favor of the English Waterloo principle. At Forbury, it was pleasant to meet Mr. Viv. Jackson, that good old Australian from the town of kegs. His heart is In the game. I am certainly pleased that the Association vindicated his opinion and win. However, it was very lucky that the' matter cropped up, as the rule m question will be simplifled so as to bear only one construction. Wanganul coursers pleaso note. "I notice," writes a prominent coursin% sport, "there is a dog racing at Wanganui named Black Tracker. Surely Black Trucker 11. it is meant for. ns there was an Auckland-bred Black Tracker, by Rond— Nellie, raced previously. Also, the breeding of Dlrkim Is given as Dingo— Sweet Alice. There was a Sweet Alice (Shylock — Ranganal). thQ dam of Motto, and granddam of Bird on the Wing by Moontide, raced here some years ago. Some -mistake In all this. Re a dog named Bugle Call In Canterbury, there never has been any other than the well-known Southland dog raced at any registered meeting m Canterbury, or named as such to my knowledge." The following is the breeding of Goldstone inquired for some time back: GoldHower — Loyalstonc. Goldllower (Goldsmith — Plgeontoc), Loyal stone (Blarneyatone — Miss Revelles). Goldstone is a red dog, and runner-up at the Waterloo Cup, Palmerston North. He is Australian-bred, and the name was registered with the old association, the books of which are not available. He ran at Invercargill 1906 or -7. Frisky Girl's breeding is: Frisky Girl (Bessie McCarthy—Frisky Lad), Bessie McCarthy (Carbine — Wild Rose), Carbine (Smoko— Lady Lynn), Wild Rose (White Rose — Miss Kelly), Frisky Lad, imp (Nenagh— Aeronaut). Tom Marshall, of Edendale, lias some very fine pups by Western Star— Wild Daisy. The dog parade at Invercargill was a great success. It was pleasant to find an old cours-
