LETTER-BOX NOT "A PLACE."
It will be remembered that some time, ago, Sol Green, the well-known metallieian, was found guilty of using a letter-b6x at the G.P.0., Melbourne, In connection with his. business operations.,, On this a fine of. £30 was imposed, as the District Court decided a box at the" G.P.O. was "a place", within, the meaning of the Act. Against this decision Green appealed to the State Full Court arid. on. Friday last the appeal was decided. By. a majority decision the Court held that a private' letter-box at the General Post Office Is not a place within the meaning of the seotion of the Police Offences Act controlling betting. 'The appeal was thus decided' in appellant Green's favor, and- his conviction quashed. Accepting that the Crown does not take the matter, on to the' High Court , for its decision, the mil Ing m Green's case stands as sound law, and betting operations may be conducted through the Victorian . P.O's. both profitably and legally. , This should be welcome news for many who would like to cater for the speculative public, but who hata hitherto found a difficulty m locating a position that was not "a ; place" within the meaning of the Act.'
