Bartley Gets Ten Years' "Hard."

.James Bartley, who was before the 1 S.M. last week on a charge of having woodened out "Pip" Metz, pawnbroker, with the hard end of a steel spanner, so that for four weeks the battered broker hovered between life and death, appeared at the Supreme Court this week for trial. He .was not represented by counsel. The evidence for the prosecution was similar to that published In last week's "Truth." Bartley, giving evidence on his own behalf, denied that the witness for the prosecution had seen him come out of Metz's shop on the morning of the assault. As a matter of fact, accused had only Just walked past Metz's doorway when tho blood-spattered pawnbroker rushed out, screaming. Bartley did not look around at Metz, but continued walking towards Manchesterstreet, until two men said Metz waa pointing him out as the man who committed tho assault. Bartley then went back and was arrested. Tho jury, after a short retirement, returned a verdict of guilty. Tho Crown Prosecutor said that the prisoner came to New Zealand eight yWrs ago from Australia. Since, then he had served nine months for forging and uttering. His Honor. In sentencing Bartley to ten years' Imprisonment, said that tho assault had been a murderous one for which Hartley would have deserved hanging if Metz had pegged out.
