NORTHERN NEWS and NOTES.
I (BY "WAIMANGU.") ■ -— I
With a good spell from local racing, Aucklanders will now have a chance to do a little work m the garden and trim the hedges. It is much surer than trimming up the "wool-brokdrs." The stallion Gladstone died at Ellerslie on Friday week, the cause of death being tetanus. The' son of Seaton Delaval — Miss Gladys, who was a full-brother to Gladsome and a halfbrother to Apologue, did not get a great many chances at the stud, but he left a few winners, the bfest belngr Glad Tidings. Gladstone was not a bad horse himself when racing, and won; amongst other events, tho G.N. Derby (tho year Nightfall fell), also tho A.R.C. Summer Cup and Avondale Cup. At the time of his death he was m charge of W. To2er. ; The progressive Avondale Club is considering the spending of more? money m improving the already up-to-date course. The latest move is tho enlarging or the present stand to treblo its size with a top-deck. Blueform, the Soult — Orange and Blue gelding of N. Cunningham's, is doing nicely, and will be some good next season. He has pace and only wants condition to win a race.
Captain Jack is booked to go -.to Trentham and Riccarton. He is stones better horse now than last year and has^eyeloped some pace. He should be all serene over the big fences at Riccarton. After all, there is little chance of E. J. Rae going to Australia, and the proposed attack on the big prizes at Randwick with La Reina- and Go. is off. E.J.R. did not go himself, last week and, is still at Ellerslie. Bluestone has only done tho very lightest of exercises since the Northern meeting, but he has never been responsible fur any gallop to set the track on fire. If he goes South and ttfc tracks are soft he will give a practical demonstration of fast galloping made easy. When tho tracks suit he is good with a. capital G. ■' ■ ■ - . • It was thought Te Onga might go into lavender after the Northern meeting, bucj he. is doing steady toil and,, the Riccarton meeting may see him again bobbing dyer the small sticks. Stay-at-home punters up Oils way did no harm over the Hawke's Bay meeting, and several well backed neddies won. Peary's trip gave backers
cold feet. D.' Moraghan, who usually takes a team to .Gisborne,. will not be represented at the approaching: winter fixture. ■ F. Tongc is paying 1 a lot of attention to the blaok gelding Siarkel. This nag will have a show when ho steps out aguin over a short course. No wonder double merchants prosper. Some few weeks ago Kilmeny was the big tip for the National, then he gave way to Chortle. The end of.l thb Northern meeting saw Admiral Soult m the boom, and now Grey King, who won at Hastings, is whispered about. Perhaps when the day | cornea round nono of those mentioned will be fancied to. any extent Charlie Coleman Intend*? to take Admiral Soult to Wellington and Christchurch. In his present form he should catch a hurdle race or a jumpers' flat. Try Fluke is m tho sale list. Tho miggety gelding is a good beginner with a fair dash of pace, and it should not he hard to place him to win races. It came aa a surprise to Aucklanders to find Matawerewore starting favorite In the hack hurdles at Hastings. The long-named one, Is not a good horse and his showings at the Northern meeting w.ere very ordinary. In any case he likes a heavy track, or, rather, he does his best then. F. Storming Is keeping Mullingar going and ho will be on hand for the Avondale Guineas. Stenning also has a chestnut hack, by Sir Lad do, who can hurry up. Ono or two punters aro waiting to bo on The Great Mogul when the "wheeze" is given. A hard-headed AucklSnd sport, who ■has just returned from the South, says Clyneltah can catch blrls, and is tho best hack seen m the Dominion for some time. j With the exception of those trainers getting horses ready for Southern meetings, most of the mentors at Ellerslio aro busy with rising two-yenr-olds. Tho youngsters arc a good-look-ing lot, but their galloping abilities na yet, are a scaled book. Hopes are still ontertalned of Maxwoll standing a preparation, and the big Soult gelding is m regular work. When the tracks harden ho is likely to go at any moment. Good riders are scarce at EllersHe just now, several of the "heads" being away In tho South. • It is to bo hoped when tho coming Reason' 8 programmes aro arranged tho A.R.C. ' ' have not overlooked hack events. No haok raco at RHerall© should, at the very* least, bo worth Ichb than a couple of hundred, as tho horses take just as much training as a cup winner, and the, events, In many cases, are harder to win than a big handicap. W. Irwln gave Ngatlruanul a turn over the hurdles the other morning tvndthe Soult gelding never put a foot wrong. Though E, J. Rao, at the. last minute, decided not to go lo Sydney. .Merrlmnx and the Slepniak pony went acroFa. Ngatoa and Zak arc entered for the Petano Stceplechuse at Napier. Ovor a two miles course Zak may bo tho better of the pair, as she has a lot of pace and will always bo with tho leadera.
