MIDDLE-WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP.
Dave Smith, wh > Is now both mid- I heavy-weight champion and Heavyweight champion of Australia, has declared nis intention of training down to 11.6. so that he can fight for tho middle-weight championship as woll. It would be a fine thing, says Dave, it he could lold three titles at once, and so It would. But there is going to be a good deal of walloping before Dave binds the third belt round his .waist. Jerry Jerome sees here a good chanco of getting an AusttaJasian titlo for himself, and ho is out after it m earnest. At present the middleweight champion is Tim Land, who hasn't. had to do yery much serious fighting to hold his ranki Whoever wants to haviv the 'title has got to beat Dalryrian Tim. or Tim's conqueror. Perceiving this, Jerry ho*, secured a match with Tim Land m Brisbane. He hopes to win thjs enGagement, and Sf he does, he will thun endeavor to make Smith meet him at 11.6 or under for the middle weight xltle. The aboriginal bases his hopes on^ the fact that there is a weight-limit' for tho title. , Ho has been boxing against Dave Smith aud Pat Bradley at J 1.13 or thereabouts, and has generally carried a lot of' flesh. Jerry is pcrouaded that at 1 1 •> he will carry all his strength, while Davy may bo a ■little below par— even though Dave did go only 11.6*4 Against Pat Bradley. That, anyway, Is the position, and a big and hard fight with Jerome will be the prelude before D.ivo can boast possession of three titles til once.
