THE AMATEURS.

Nothing of Note m Wellington. | The. amateur cliampionships of Wellington, which were put through on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings of last week, were . disappointing m every respect. . The fans did mot turn up m numbers, and, if the Wellington I Association gets through without recording a loss on the transac- : tion "it will be a surprise. Unfortunately, however, . "The Second,'" due to the fact that he was j gripped by influenza, and was, therefore, unable to be- on hand throughout the tourney, is not able to express any opinion on 'tb.e quality of the material provided. ' The entries m each division ware generally satisfactory, and everything gave promise" of a good' two night's tourney. The inevitajWe, however, happened. Oneyor more were . unable to pass tlie doctor, others j turned up and "died on it at the last moment, while others "died" on ;it and did not turn up. This* was particularly the case m the y heavyweight division. yEach night the programme promised heavy-weights and each night the patrons were disappointed. It was not the Associa- , tion's fault. The "hopes" *t>romised to be there, but failed to keep their engagements, and the Association, therefore, was left m the lurch. Incidentally, the Association has been taught one or two lessons, which it is to be hoped will be profited hy. In the face' of the 'poor quality generally, it is not anticipated that Wellington will send a full team to the championships at Timaru. fThe Association is to meet this week-end for the purpose of dealing with the forthcoming chatoipiouships, and it is likely that two, \n.d, at the outside, three boxers will be' sent south. It is pretty well certain that Brice (bantam) and F. Leary (feather) will be selected. There is a likelihood 1 of a light-weight being selected. The name of E. Stewart has been mentioned.
