An Allegation of "Cooking."
At its last' meeting the Rugby Union had before it a case m which "it was alleged that an attempt had been, made to ""doctor" a recent match. The allegation was that one McLaughlan (an cxplayer of the Tajieri Rovers team) met Platterson (a well-known Z{ingari-RS.eh-mond player, and reckoned to be the mainstay of the first fifteen) m a hotel, and had some words about the forthcoming match between the teams. (If Rovers bad won, tJhe championship score would have borne a different complexion as regards the teams m the middle division.) The Complaint or the'-zsngari Club set out that Mcl^augbAan ottered Patterson £1 if he would "go stiff m the game," which offer Pjatterson declined, saying, 'Wo, I'm playing for ZSingari to-day.* 11 After the matter had been gone into by the committee it was found that McLanghlan's alleged offer consisted of the jocular remark: "I'd give a quid to see you lose." The coinnattee decided to take no further action beyond warning tthe Zingari Club not to sens* along any more mares' nests—^robabjlyj because the union has any amount of its own.
