It is interesting to find it mentioned m the political gas generator, Wellington, that the Canterbury Jockey Club is one of the few clubs, if not the only one, that consults the police about the character of applicants for boolvmaking licenses. As a matter of fact, the Canterbury Jockey Club was the first large club to license thieves, and did it wholesale without any regard . for police opinion whatsoever. The circumstance was mentioned to a horrified court m several trespass and vagrancy cases.
