AWAPUNI TRAINING STABLES.

Passing through Palmerston North during the week, I called at the Highden stables to have a look at J. Price's team. During the latter' s absence m Sydney, W. Gillet is m charge, and, judging by the spick and span appearance of the place, the popular Awapuni mentor will have nothing to complain of when, he comes back. The whole team bear a very healthy appearanoe, and, fortunately, the prevalent cough has not yet made its appearance. The big Multiform colt, Polymorphous, looks to have wintered splendidly, but he has not been allowed to become gross, and takes plenty of trotting and walking exercise. 1-Jc is as handsome as ever, a«d the thought that struck the writer was what an ideal sire he will make later on. Tbe big Finland gelding, JMylaml, Has also done well, and is wearing a very healthy appearance. He has thickened out a good deal, aiwi promises to turn i out a useful 4-yr-oW. Owing to the accident to Boanerges, it may be that this horse will be the stable representative m the Winter Cup, and, as m his last few races m nbe autumn he gave evidence of running on, it will be no surprise to see him land the big mile at Riccarton. 'Hie classic colt, Boanerges, recently met , with a slight accident while being exer- • cised m the roads, and at present he is - suffering from broken knees. His trainer makes light of it, and says it is only a . scratch. This colt has always been awkward, and several times he has fallen on the tracks and on the roads. He is clumsy on his feet, and if he strikes a bit of unever ground, over he goes. m future he will not be allowed on the roads without knee-pads. lhe other seasoned performers m Pcrolina, Aorangi, Vasa, Gloss and Celacno, have all been weeded out for various causes, and their boxes filled with youngsters. The 2-yr-old filly, Kilosteri, by kilcheran—Certificate, may bo given a run m the Trial Plate at Trentham next ' Saturday. She is on the small side, but her owner speaks well of her. Another 2-yr-old -filly m Allurement (Soult — Inamorata) has not been up long, and will not race till well into the spring. This is a full brother to O.hauvclin, and is better grown than the previous youngster. The best, of the vouna; sfcufl is undoubtedly a bay coik by Field Battery from Our Lady, by Simmer. ' He was purefcaced at G. Curris's stud at Won-

ganui m February last, and has been handled only about two months. He is a very strongly-built, thick-set colt, with a good head, and comes up well on top. He is a galloper all over, and, looks like coming early. The St. Ambrose— Marsellaise colt, which was purchased at tbe last Waikanae sale, is just being broken m, and is very much on the poor side yet.. A full sister to Gloss is m an adjoining box, and is a nice looking filly ; sheis better grown than her sister, and is< a good lengthy filly, with a splendid back and quarters. ' '. The Sir Laddo — Ponaturi gelding which, was kicked by Polymorphous last year, and had to be put out, is again m work. He still carries a mark- behind where the '. Multiform colt dealt witli ham. He is a ; good quiet sort, like the rest of the Sir' Laddos, and shows promise of being ahle ; to gallop. Then there is a bay filly by Sir Laddo from Windlass, and another that is just being handled. Gillet has a lot of time for this youngster, and says he never saw a horse take so kindly to . his work before. Jockey A.; Oliver has now taken, up his residence at the stafcles, and, along with the light-weight Stanley Reid, will m future ride the different lots m their jitrack work. In continuation of my mission, 1 drove to Clovcrlen Lodge to have a glimpse at , A. Meale's team, the active members of which are described hereunder. Phaune, a half-sister to Oryx, is a taking [so;tt; she is. a constant attendant on tne tracks at Awapuni, and may make her I ttow m a maiden race early m the spring. | llxa 2-yr-old Vibration has done well j during his short spell, and has thickened \ out a. good deal- Meale does not intend Ito hurry him, and it will be some time [ before he races again. i The badly-legged Ranjikura is standing lup to his work well, arai his trainer thinks he will bo afcle to keep him on his That good horse, Ahe_b_o__ock, looks, better than ever he dM previously, but -. there is still some doubt about his shoulder. He is doing trotting on the roads, and is fining down a lot under tbis treatment. G-oMsby, by Gold Reef from Miss Catesby, is on the small side. A peculiar feature ofi this horse is bis very big, beefy shoulders. He has. small bones, ami does jnot strike oi» as". being able to stand [ much work.. The rising)- 2-year-old colts make up the . team. One is a black full-brother to Rangipapa, and a very good li___ess of Boanerges, while he does not resemble his brother ih the least. He is a big, well-grown youngster, but the trio are all backward, anl their palmy days, if they arrive at a_, will he when they are S-yr-cdds. Another is a bay colt by Papakura from Lightsome, and the pick of the lot is a very well grown chestnut by Papaknra from Anser Anser. He has a long reach, perhaps a bit light m the bone, but on top he is a splendid colt, and looks like being up to any weight with Mb big shoulder and broad back.
