ATHLETIC v. WELLINGTON.
.', .The scoring m this game does not fairfly represent the difference between the two, . teams en the day. It looks big, ./but WelMi^ton 1 were not quite so much as tne would think. Tbe main point about tbe winners' play was that ..they made very few errors, and gener-'-jally managed to score when the opportunity came their way. (It is a fine to have a few forwards with) 'brains -l«l a team.) A fine dribbling rush by the Athletic forwards, and McVay scored, t WWson adding the extra points. Another ~i,score came mmediately through the agenf'.cy of Rapson (by fast following), hut JEvenson's kick failed. Afrfilctic Bt© nil. <- Wellington made a fine rush to their line, and a penalty for faand-
ling the hall m the scrum enabled Lambert to kick a goal — ins team's one and only score on the day. With the score showing 8 t 0 3, Athletic returned to the attack, and I. Cunningham scored from another forward rush, Evenson converting the try (13 to 3). In the second spell, Athletic added another nine points to their score, making, it finally 22 t 0 3-. Wellington tried hard, but, though they never lost heart, they lost dash. Being up against the Athletic' forwards on a wet ground is somewhat calculated to take some of the starch out of a lighter team. Nevertheless, ti»y .worked well, and had bad luck not to score on more than one occasion. 'lt>ey just lacked that finishing bit o! devil necessary to complete the job. Tries tor the winners were obtained m the second spell by Rapson, Murray, and Ma_*n_ie, off which no goals were kicked. • There was nothing particularly notice-, able about the game, except the-ovork of the Athletic forwards. It was a hard game, but quite friendly, and the referee Mr* Moran did not have .a very, difficult task, even although tiie play did not finish until! darkness had almost set m. m fact, when tiie last try was scored, it was atmost impossible to tell friend from foe«i on the field.
