The amateur championship of England has turned out this year to be a far greater drawing card than all the pro-< fesslonal tournaments. All parts of the British Islands are represented, ■ and: one E. 11. Hinds, of far distant Hong Kong, won his first two rounds, reaching on one occasion the coveted century break. Much interest is being taken m the heats, m which all the most noted of England's amateurs, arc. taking part. Breaks up to 150 have been common m the qualifying rounds. * The results should be through by next mail. John Roberts, touring Australia under the management of Messrs Alcock and Co., opened his season m Perth (W.A.) j on the fiast day of March by defeating a local chamnibn (James), giving away 450 m 650— (Rokerts' breaks, 163, 149, and lU2, unfinished). Later m the week, however, he struck trouble m attempting •to give another local (Coleman) 225 m 800. Coleinan defeated him by the amount of his handicap,' 225. John made one 'run of 236, Coleman must be a fairly hot proposition! on this 'showing. The forthcoming visit to the Do--minion of John Ro-jaerts is .already arousing widespread interest. The" dates for' the tour are not yet settled, but it is expected that the middle of the winter will see the G-.0.M. of billiards amongst us. Messrs Alcock and Co., with their 1 usual keen business acumen, have secured the right of acting as sole agents m the colonies for the new game of diamond pool. The local manager will be pleased to supply all particulars. A Defence League has been 'fonped m Auckland te organise and . conduct the defence to the pending actions as the result of recent police prosecutions. A request for. funds for the purpose has already been liberally responded to, the subscription list being headed with a donation of £10 from Messrs Alcock and Co., Ltd. Other firms and billiard room proprietors are contributing £5 and smaller sums. Mr Eaxle, of Earle and Kent, has been retained to conduct the defence on behalf of the room propriet- ! ors. . The special committee set up at the recent meeting ot proprietors of public billiard rooms 'in' Wellington to draft a constitution and rules for the Association has completed its task, and a comprehensive code of rules and regulations will be suhmifcted to another meeting to be held next week, wien oiKcers for the j ensuing year, will be elected. The workmen at the east end of the Otira tunnel are to be provided with a billiard table, and Alcock and Co., Ltd., have been instructed to ship a full size standard tn-Me ±n that locality at an
