CATCHY LEGAL POINT.
Before' Magistrate Bartholomew, at the Dunedin Police Court on Monday, a ■woman appeared to ask. for maintenance of her illegitimate child. The. child was bprn m 1903, but when the little stranger arrived, its father found the climate of the North Island more congenial and stayed there for 18 months. Then, he came, back to Otagp, and six weeks later ga^e . the iiiother *^3. Payments, for the child's suppiirt , were not begun until iaOB,; when;' ; its;' grandfather paid ail through'a 4 rn > of solicitors. Since then about '£33 lias Vbcen paid. In the case of childreii over" six years the law lays it down -that before, ajni order is made the Magistrate must -be satisfied that a pay-ment'has-been made -within six months ■of' the summons calling on the fattier to contribute. Mr Hawkins, who appeared for; complainant, tried to prove this on a payment made on February 24, but as tlns f date was after the date on- 'which •the summons was issued, and as the previous payment was ■-, over six months to the date, the case was xiis<nissed.
