WE PARTED IT THE COURT.

"RES LOVERS" SEPARATED. Gentleman Goes to Gaol. And the Belle to Booth's Booth. For five years James Martin and Alice Kaye have led an ideal life. They have lived together and. enjoyed the fierce joys of domesticity and conjugality without being trammelled by certain writing called "lines," "which is much sought after by oldrfasbioned women. In America some years ago there was a sect; called "Free Lovers, 1 ' -who approved the conjugal system followed by James and Alice, and m their case a man or a woman could cotton on to one another if they were "affinities" ; but the modern "Free Lovers" generally come together because the gentleman m the case is fond of shikkur and frightened of work. For- the greater part of the time they lived together, James had worked fairly steadily, but about Christmas last he developed a bad attack of that tired feeling, and since then he hasn't worked enough to keep a canary m bird seed, and had mixed much with prohibited persons, vagrants and prostitutes. Woodileld Place, which undesirable domicile was recently re-onganised by ordering Cooper away into the country, and his "Free Love" wife, Bessie Woods, into the Salvation Army Home. When the Johns were busy dealing with Cooper and Woods, Martin was warned that he would have to cut them off his visiting list unless he wanted to have a sojourn m jug, but he took no notice. In his time- Martin resided m various places m Dunedin, but one recent domicile was at 16 ' Athoi Place, and the relatives of prohibited men m the 1 ;, vicinity complained that he acted as a lighthouse towards them. Recently Martin came violently under the notice of the police, as Trap Edwards had to visit his place of" residence to 'make inquiries as to the way James was knocking his paramour about. This was about February 18, soon . after Martin had moved into the northern part of the city. Since his arrival there he was daily to be seen taking disreputable and dissolute-looking men to his ' house, and when Martin was arrested there were strange men about and Kaye was m a half-naked and wholly drunken condition. Kaye seems to have had onls a second-rate kind of time of ,it, her "Free Lover" habitually taking it out of her hide if she failed to work for him. Martin has a list of 22 " previous convictions, the following being some of his performances, for which he did time or forked out fines : — 1902, obscene language, resisting police ; 1905, illegally on premises, assault (twice), resisting police, damaging John's duds ; 1906, illegally on premises; 1907, assaulting police, obscene language ; -1908, breach of the peace; 1909, breach ol the peace, mischief and assault. As a natural result of such goings-on, James and Alice found themselves before Magistrate Widdowson last Saturday, and after Sergeant Willis and Constables [ H. Butler and. Edwards had related what they knew of accused, James was sent to jug for three ' months and' Alice w^s asked to live m Booties Brigade's Home for a year. .
