WAS FRANCIS PHILP DRUGGED?
In the Dunedin Supreme Court on Monday Francis Paton Pbilp pleaded not guilty to a charge of having on December. 27, 1909, stolen, a mars and a saddle and' bridle.. ., . .;, ..<■. The evidence showed that accused was given the loan of the horse and saddle by a livery stable keeper ia. Queenstown, and' after he rode to Cromwell on it he sold the saddle and bridle to' a livery stable keeper there, afterwards selling the horse to another .stable keeper. * Accused cross-examined all the witnesses, but his object seemed to be to prove that the saddlery was of a secondrate order and that the' horse wasn't up to much. HU» versidn, o! the business was that he sold the horse because it was too ill to take back, and hr sold the saddle . because he 'didn't want to carry it back. He intended to give the money to Dagg, but on his way back he was drugged, in. ia hotel and was "gone through" for all ithe money he. had. A verdict of guilty was returned, and accused was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. ■
