SNUBBING A SERGEANT.
An Expensive Luxury.
Sergeant Kelly, who is a noted swimmer and can break 30secs over 50yds, was insulted m the bar of the Royal Hotel on the eveniug of January 29 last, and John Doyle, who toils on the wharf for a crust bad to' explain the reason why to Mr Riddell, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. '• 1 The Sergeant was on duty on the evening m question and popped into the bar to see that all was well, when his ears were assailed with the remark: "What are you doing here ; are you bumming for beer ?'* As the day previeusI ly Doyle had been fined m the S.M.s Court for having played "hazards" down on the wharf Ke% recognised him and deprecated such an : insult being hurled at him, whereupon Ddyle said, "I didn't know it was you, Sergeant." Mr Riddell having heard the evidence said there was no justification for the insult to the sergeant, who was m the hotel on duty ; though the S.AI. admitted that- under s'ome circumstances and to Other individuals the insult would he justified. It was not a case for a heavy fine and he therefore imposed a penalty •f 10s »nd cotton
