Bill Squires Hooted.
The Sydney "Sportsman thus comments on Bill Squires' capacity as a referee of boxing^ contests. Squires refereed m the recent Sumrners-Unholz fight, and declared it a draw, though all good judges assert that Summers won by a street :—
How are the mighty fallen ! Some few short months ago Boshter Bill Squires — •Our BiH, ? as he was lovingly fenned by the Australian sporting men geaerally — was Australia's idol. Then, came his three successive defeats, and although bis popularity appeared to be on the wane, he was accorded a hearty welcome on appearing, m the ring at the Stadium last Wednesday, to . referee the Summers-Un-holz disturbance. How different was his departure about an hour and a half Jater. Surrounded by a surging, swaying mob shouting all sorts of unintelligible insults at him, the erstwhile champ, slowly, and with great difficulty, made his way to' his dressing r room. What a relief it must have been to be free of that hooting; jostling mob, and it only wanted one person to go the least bit over the odds and the chances are that a riot would have occurred, resulting m Bill '.: being; badly mauled. Luckily, the Australian sporting crowd is naturally orderly. I"t is also a fool, for no matter what red-hot ramps are handed out to. it, it always turns up smiling, and, liite ■ little Oliver Twist, asks for more.":
