PONY RACING.
At Miraraar.
Fine weather, but the attendance was nothing great. The average, public are beginning to : wake up to the fact that pony racing is not for them. ■ • - ; Nothing out of the ordinary occurred, and the. meeting passed off very, well. Only one protest during the day and it; took a long time to consider, but the judge's ruling was .not disturbed. 'This was a right verdict/ but only as far as the horse was concerned. , No doubt at all that Wadham (rider of Wee Nannie) should have gone out fox foul riding, as he zig-zagged across the course no end of times, trying to stop Axite, and, a-t the same time, lot Miss Ruby up. ■ . Eagar, owner of Wee Nannie, backed his mare. . Seven runners m the first event, and betting chopped round a lot. Billy was first backed, then came money for Sirrah, and also Mytre. At- the , close, the connections of Emma slipped m and backed their mare ; down from Bs to the position of favorite... No money Miss Ivy or Ora Pinsent, but all others triers.' ' Emma was m front from the four' furlong post, and won comfortably. The Maiden was a two-horse race, and the favorite, Bobs, won comfortably from Mahaku, who does not seem to be worth feeding. - The Cup saw' two backed— viz., . AH Gold and Wharekoa. All Gold, who used to race on the registered courses as Swallow, led early, and just lasted long enough to win. It was a lucky victory, . but reverse the riders, and the positions would have been the same. Ourlot broke a blood vessel and ran last.. Sunshine ran a good third, and may be backed- to-day. The 14.2 Handicap resulted m a . boilover and a protest. Axite was made very hot, but he did not get away too well, and was quickly chopped out by Wadham on Wee Nannie, who dealt with him the whole way. Miss Ruby was the "pea," but she was not good enough. The others were all "stoomed," particularly Huia and Dearest. The Newmarket Handicap was a real good racs, and right up to the box was anyone's race. All Gold was running for the second •'leg" of several doubles. Ora Pinsent was heavily backed, but ran badly. St. Flora was also backed well, and so v/as Inkerman and Paul m a lesser degree. Mermaid, ridden by Dave Wright, who has taken on the pony game, was doing her best. She began smartly, but her condition gave out, and she was nearly over. She looks as if a good feed would do her the world of good. St. Flora was with Mermaid m the early part, and after the latter retired, the chestnut . went on alone. She was hard put to it to stall OH a
late run by All Gold, but had been dealt with badly m the early part of the race. "Cocky" Peaison was riding at the I meeting, so why not grant J. Burns a [.license? 'It would be an act of grace on the club's part to allow him to ride during the last few meetings.
