BILLIARDS.
christchurch Exhibitions.
During National week Chris ichuivh residents had an opportunity of witnessing i the dexterity with a 10113 stick ;,nd three ! balls of J.W. Read, who claims to Lc ihc billiard champion of New Zcalanu. Flc met L. I-I. Rodgers, a local amateur, m Browirs Saloon, at Addington, conceding his opponent 350 m 'i<iU. Hodaers also started. After the break-up, Read 1 opened with a 64 run, when he lost- the j white, followed by a break of S9. Other breaks m consecutive order were 22, 3i>, 33, 41 (including masse cannon), 64 (off white), 10-1 -(off white), '12, 21, 27, \)H. The two large breaks off the white were i especially meritorious. The icd, up against cushion m baulk, was practically out of action, and with the white only to play at, Read scored, first 61 m losing hazards, then 104, mostly m topcorner bags. The Wellington expert uses a 15ioz cue. On the following evening Read met Stephenson, Christchurch champion, man exhibition match m the Cycling Club's rooms, m a game of 750 up. Read played a safe, "dry" game, but Stephenson, who was otf-color, owing to incipient "3u," played free, open billiards for the benefit of the spectators, and enhanced the attractiveness of the exhibition, although had he played safety he would have increased his chances of success. Read's highest break was 115, and another run of SO odd was almost entirely off the red. The best breaks of Stephen, sen were SO and 78. Later the Christchurch man challenged Read to a match for a wager, but as the visitor leaves shortly lor th? Cold Dart it is improbable that the meeting will take place.
