A SAVELOY SUPPER.
Bought by Bogus Paper.
The old law, which permitted boodleseekers to print and circulate paper, for advertising purposes, which might be mistaken for "bank-notes, has had evil consequences even to the present day. Seven years ago Christchurch Cycling Club held a carnival, .and printed a large number of advertisinu; slips that looked like bank notes. Since then the law has been altered, but apparently some of the seven-year-old counterfeits still survive. -Being Grand National time, Christchurch is over-run with "crooks," who have already got to work, but owing to the ac- . tivity of a specially reinforced body of peelers, many of the spielers will never see the Grand National, unless the Riccarton Inferno is shifted out to Riccarton for their convenience. William Swanson must have been hard up for coin whan he attempted to pass the Cycling Club's abortion for a £1 note at Joseph I-lenry Thomas's niovcable coffee stall late the other night. He approached the travelling hashery with a mate nnd caUed for A BOB'S WORTH OF SAVELOYS. These he handed to his pal, who discreetly disappeared while Swanson .was fumbling for the bogus note. The charactcLof the note was discovered by Thomas and the stall staff rushed Swanson, and made him a prisoner until the police arrived. Swanson pleaded guilty to the icharge next day, and apknowledged 'that
he had done tiuee months m Duneuin for vagrancy and assault. Magistrate Haselden thought retirement for another three months would do no harm to the man, who will emerge from seclusion when the flowers that bloom m the spring aro qualifying for an old age pension. The Cycling Club's note was for the ambitious sum of £1000, and copies were scattered broadcast to advertise the fac6 that Plugger Bilrnartin, after .being played out m Australia, would exhibit his noble form at Lancaster Park on a specific date.
