I A Hubby who Hopped Off. William Joseph McDougall, a Christchurch bricklayer with the intellectual features of a Judge of the {Supreme Court, met with the unpleasant experience of being extradited from Sydney last week, on a charge of wife desertion. It's rather a costly thing to bring a man back from Sydney m custody, and that a bricklayer's missus should have been able to put up the stult for that purpose occasioned surprise. When McDougall appeared before the Magistrate's Court, Magistrate .Haselden was curious on the point and asked if the money had been paid down. Sub-Inspector McGrath said that the police had received a guarantee for the payment of the money. Further inquiry revealed the fact that no bond had been entered into, but it was explained that the authorities satisfied themselves that the deserted woman was good for the amount, which might be anything from £20 to £25. "I had money left to me by my first husband,' said Mrs McDougall, who spoke with, a strong North of Ireland accent: The S.M. asked her how much she was worth, and she replied that she had a little property. HE KNOCKS ME ABOUT AND DRINKS. What is his occupation ? — He's a bricklayer, and earns lbs a day. How long have you been married •? — Four years. The S.M. : Why did you go to Sydney ? —To look for work. I went with her consent. Sub-Inspector McGrath said the arresting constable informed him that it was true the woman had been m correspondence with hubby, and Imew ims address.
