FLYNN AND THE FEMALES.
ALLEGED BIGAMIST ARRESTED. One Man : Three Wives. The Case Adjourned. Wise men say there are more women*than men m the world, That's why some girls are single all their lives. Three women to every man ! Come, then, say if you can Why can't every man have three wives? This is the refrain of a music-all ballad Ihftt was very popular m Hold Hingland some years ago. Gilded Johnnies thought it would be great fun, dorichcrkuow, to be blessed with three j wives, "to have an,d to hold.*' Not so the average weary male person who has put his- head into Hymen's -halter m a blind (drunk) ,or unguarded moment. The Brigham Young stunt has no charms for him. >Enough is better than a feast m matrimonial matters, and one able-bodied wife— like one volatile little flea— is amply sufficient to keep a man. from worrying over the sins of his wasted youth. But there are exceptions to every rule and freaks m every walk of life. "Truth," for instance, once knew a poetical publican and a ballet fiirl who objected to "tight" lacing. And there is a man m Dunedin just now who is a regular glutton for brides — his own; not the other fellows'. His motto is said to be "Marry early and marry often." In fact, it the police are telling the truth, the whole, truth, etc., this whale for. women has literally taken the advice of the ballad quoted above and had three wives. . ■ , His name is Thomas Patrick Flynn and he was brought before the Police Court last week and: formally charged with bigamy. The staid and stodgy "O.D. Times" was so excited that it forgot itself and fon once attempted a hit of picturesque descriptive work m reporting the case.. "When the ' accused's name was called out," says "0.D.T.," "eyes were turned inquisitively towards the dook to get a glimpse of the man who is alleged to "nave three wives. The ac-. cused, who is a man above medium height, looked anxious and slightly careworn when the charges were read out to him." Please don't all laff at once. "ANXIOUS AND SLIGHTLY CAR&i WORN !" Did they expect a man with three wives to look as fresh and blooming as a blush rose, and as chirpy and free from care as a cock-sparrow on a cab stand ? Go to! '■ The charges were that on February 4, at Dunedin, accused, then being married, blgamously went through the form of marriage with another woman ; and that, on November 3, 19U8, at Diunedin, being still more married, he repeated the bigamous performance witjh a third unsuspecting girl. Chief 'Tec. Paddy Herbert stated that accused was arrested by 'Tecs. Ward and Hunt on the first charge, but the evidence would not be ready for some days, and he, therefore, asked for a remand. Accused, vho had made no remark v.hon the charges were read out, applied for baiW The Chief stated that accused was first and legally married at Arrowtown about se\«n years ago, and, when arrested, was living wit;h his legal wiEe. The two other women with whom he had gone through the ceremony were both living m Dunedin. Paddy asked that .bail should toe made substantial, as accused had no ties m Dunedin, unless any afiection he might have towards * his first wife and their two children might be considered such. The r. mand was granted and, bail was fixed at £200 m accused's own recognisance, and two sureties, of £100 each, or one of £200. Fl>nn was brought before the Dunedin Court on Tuesday last, charged with? bigamy. A great deal of evidence was adduced and the case was furtheF adjourned.
