A man of mark— One who cannot write his own name.
Mr 'C. H. Izard. the Government candidate for the Wellington Worth Electorate, points out that m 1905 m his proposals placed before the electors, he advocated a thirty-four years' lease Avith the right of renewal v lor Grown lands ; abolition of duties on the necessaries of lite and an increase of the graduated land tax ; the immediate settlement of surplus Crown and Native lands ; construction of roads to back-blocks ; and the abolition of residential clauses to city workers, aud opposition to Asiatic immigration. Mi Izard proudly claims that most of his proposals 1 have been given effect to, viz., sixty-six years' renewable lease m place of 999 years, and a thirtythree years' renewable lease m the case of laiul-for-i'el-Wement lands ; Customs duties on the necessaries of life reduced by £410,000 ; the graduated land tax increased. As far as land for settlement is concerned, the fact that between January and September of this year 482 persons had selected 181,431 acres of Crown lands spoke'for itself, and the IJoyal Commission (Native Land) had approved GOS acquisitions totalling 491,133 acres, all of which Avould come into the market. The sum of £250,000 was specially devoted to roading the back-blocks, and the Chinese Immigration Act had been improved. In addition, "Tlte Flour and Other Food Monopolies Act, 1907, gave power to the Governor to take off the duties of Hour and potatoes m case of a fancy price being reached. For these reasons Mr Izawl claims that he has .merited the confidence of the electors.
