A BRUTAL PROHIBITHMIST.

Refuses a Cup of Cold Water !

A brutal yarn is told of a leading Christchurch prohibitionist, who has got cold water on the brain. An invalid girl of fifteen was being | wheeled out m the melting nor'-wester pne s,umiy afternoon; when she thirsted for a drink of water. Searching the /neighborhood, the girl's sister, herself an ardent no-liceuist, sighted the residence of the prohibitionist, and wheeled her sister up 'to the iront door The tea apostle's wife' came to the door, and /seemed convulsed with rage /when ,she heard the simple request for a glass of water. The angry tones of her voice BROUGHT THE FANATIC HIMSELF to the door, and his wife explained that the hussy had asked for a drink of cold water. "We have seen : tb<? many of you," she said, with violence, to the girl; her husband agreed, and the, door was slammed m the face of the young woman, A\ho vainly tried to explain that the simple beverage was for the invalid sisier outside. This paper hasn't been told, and doesn't know, if the incident hastened the end, but the sick girl died shortly after, ;.and so great an impression had it made upon her mind that she cried to her mother repeatedly ere she ga\e up the 'ghost to write to the inhospitable prohibitionist and / reproach his brutality. The mother, did 'so, and the prohib. hastened round to the house of the girl but arrived too late to express his contrition for what he had done. "Truth" supposes there is a moral attached to this yarn, but hasn't had time to look for it m the strenuous rush of going to press. f
