There was a good deal of newspaper controversy afterwards, particularly as regards the decision, and m his Jackson obituary notice (Jorbett says :— "Goddard would never have gono into the ring had Peter not consented to let him live the term out and share the purse of £400. . . No inducement whatever could tempt Joe into the ring with Peter again."
