TRAINING STABLES.
H. Telford at Awapuni.
-' One fine day last, -week -I tdok;-;a train to Awapuni. to express an , expert; opinion on the team that Harry Telford presides over. ' . • The house and stables are situated quite close to the road on some ten acres of ground, which is divided into several small paddocks of a convenient size. • . . . Fortune was kind all day and luckily Telford was- at home, and on my making known to him the purpose of my invasion, lie promptly insisted on my partaking of some dinner and ihpn the horses were inspected. At dinner I met i\lr and Mrs Telford, the parents of ■ the trainer, and was pleased to find tha couple hale ami hearty and m a.. very optimistic mood as to the futuie . of Awapuni. At the present time there are six horses m .the stable, und thty lepk the picture of health. It would be a. hard task to find a prettier arid more showy animal about Palmerston Worth than. First .Mate, who is just recovering frciin a slight mishap. He is a beautiful bay m color, arid ,is by Bluejacket from Jennie. A bit;, on the small side, but showing plenty of and I should say he is a Aery strong animal, ; " The next box contained Soncariq, who was. purchased at the Stead sale by a patron Of V the ■ "'sta'olc. " She is a thrce-yc'ar-old bay filly, byi Mensohikoß, ftdnr Cissy' (haU-sister to AHair and Daystar),has a very 'aristocratic appearance, ahd carries herself like a racehorse. Her mentor told, me that she was a good feeder and/he is greatly pleased with' Tier. At- present' 1 she was m physic, but will make her .appearance on the iacecoutsi» about the beginning ol the year. . The next was Sir Antrim, full bfotker to Lord S'oult, who showed splendid form m his first display at Marton, and is, I think* likely t« emulate th» deeds
of his elder brother. , He is not much taller than Lord Spult, but is much more compact. He is the kind pi horse a trainer likes, as he will stand any amount of work and is always ready for his feed. Magnbtp is the name chosen for the brown fllly by Merriwee • from 'The Brook, who was purchased : at Hastings m the Autumn by the owner of Trugunini. This filly is slightly but . should come later on. She is a typical Torpedo, and is engaged m the Hawke's Bay Stakes, but can hardly be m a forward enough condition to race there. ''"■'; : The black mare Advantage is allowed to run m the paddock all day, and looks the picture qi health. t Evidently ' this treatment is just v^hat suits. hef. 'Her coat. shone like satin, and' no ' fault could be found with her.. She is/ engaged at Wanganui at the end of this month.' Last, but not least, -was Truganini, who went under to Mcata m the Rail-' way 'Handicap at Trentbam last Autumn. She has developed into a beautiful mare,, and, judging by her condition, her trainer -has riot been idle with her. . Unless some mishap overtakes her, she should .win many races during this season. All m all, Telford lias, a fine team, and, with any , luck should lead m many Winners during the next 'year. ■' Cohort, who is engaged -m the N:Z. Cup, .has not gone on the fight way. and has been turned out for : a lengthy spell. An addition is expected 4o thar stable any day now m the shape -of B/iJliancy, a good sbrt.pf four-year-did gelding by Hbtoh : kiss put of G'plden . Shine,, , whp clajjri.i St.. Leger as' her' sifel. /B.rilliancy tried' as. a jumperi^andl'Teifprd ig much enahipred with his^ prpspects.- "■'■'■'"'; •■
