HAWKE'S BAY HUNT CLUB.

"Spreader" writes :—

Several horses, with Riccarton engagements next we^k, gave this year's annual meeting of the H.B.H.C. a good deal of importance. In the past many good handicap horses have made their primary efforts under silk at the annual fixtures of the club ; . no later than last year Post Haste, Dawn and White Lie were amongst thes Carters', the first two annexing winning brackets. About twenty bookmakers registered, and though prices were fairly liberal the majority showed a margin .on the right side for the meeting.

A useful-looking bay inare named Destroyer, Torpedo— Javcline, trained by IS,

J. Rae, had no trouble in securing the | Hunters' Bracelet, two miles, from Lady Adair and hall a dozen others.

Black Reynard was a strong "heads" fancy for the Open Plat Race, once round, but list, proved too much for the Reynard gelding, who finished third. Comedian, who was in a galloping humor, landed the stake comfortably from Uenuku. Abei started in this race, but a bad start gave him too much leeway to make up. Black Reynard, is in great heart just now and must give a good account ot himself down South if things "come his way." The Steeples were voted a moral for old Gold Seal, whose 12.13 was thought .insufficient to stop Mm. The race was a very poor one. Tizara would probably have landed the stake had he stood up, as he had a strong load up to the second to last jump, whiph he failed to negotiate safely, thus leaving Gold Seal in front of King John, who made a good strong run -at the finish. On this run Gold Reef's son hasn't a hope in the National, and, unless he improves out of sight at Kiccar ton will be hardly worth an investment. Still, they're a poor lot. this year, and a "roughie" with a light weight always has a jumper's chance.

The Trial Hack brought to the post nine two-iyear-olds, five geldings and lour fillies. The Hon. J. D. Ormond's Bollin, by Birkenhead— Goyt, a smart-looking fray gelding, was made a hot favorite, Mr E. J. Watt's, Cork, by Merriwee,— Float, and Sir W. R. Russell's Castiglione, by . Birkenhead — Corleone, also receiving solid support. ' '

A bad start settled the chances qf Boilin. The winner, Cauldron (Merriwe&--Bubbles, ridden by Fred Davis, who stai"6ed at a "Signorinetta 1 ' price, just" land- ■ ing the stake from Castiglione. If track" work is any gauge, Bollin must turn out a useful horse this Spring. A. Hyde landed the Hunters' Plat Race on. the Mahafci mare, Peaceful, who failed to give Lady Adair 121bs over two miles. TheSecdnd Open Flat Race was a soft snap for Mr,G. P. Donnelly's Hotclikiss filly Chrysoprase, who won as she liked from a moderate field of half-a-dozen, including Linkless, Faro and Ancyie. Just here it might be mentioned, without prejudice, that during the .laist year there has not -been a meeting, in the Dominion at which "cleaner" racing , has; been put . before the public: '^Every race contained a majority, of triers, aid-it speaks ' volumes for the sporting men- of the district that such small prizes /brought to light such good cattle and good fieMs.
