THE CHOW CURSE.

Published evebx Saturday Mobning at Luke's Lane (off Mannebs-. STBEET), WELriINQTON, N.Z. SUBSCRIPTIOIt (IN ADVANCE), 13S, : PER ANNUM.

SATURDAY, JULY 11, 1908

The evil-smelling ohow has frequently been referred to m these columns, and not m the politest of language either, as he is an excrescence on. the face of this fair land, and "Truth and its many fair-minded readers -would, hail with delight the advent of a statesman who had the courage to tackle this nauseous auestida with the gloves off. True, last session our only , Joe Ward succeeded m getting a measure through Parliament with the avowed object of restricting l the : immigration of the stinking alien, who should" be placed under the Noxious Weeds Act and exterminated. But the measure was simply an abortion and will/ not 'have the effect of prohibiting the entrance to Ntuy Zealand of a single Chow. On. the other hand, it will mean that the aliens who will now reach these shores, will be mostly English-speak-ing Qhows from Burmah, the Straits Settlements, Hong Kong, and Singapore, and, what is still ■ worse, the slums of Canton.; They will be a far greater menace to the white worker of these islands than the uneducated Chows who have hitherto made an entry into New Zealand. In the Eastern countries named. Chows are eng&'ged/ m many occupations and even hold jpdsitions as clerks and tellers m, the banks, so that the danger, to New Zealanders will be. readily seen. Htad Joe Wardvmade his measure as strong as; the Australian Act then the Chow would have been prevented from entering New Zealand altogether. The Australian Act, which is a general measure, provides that am alien must read and write tp , the satisfaction of -the., examining Customs officer, sentences m "an 'European" . language.; thus m the event of any English-speaking Chow aTriying. at a port, the test could be applied to him m German, French, Greek, or Italian, arid' the would-be immigrant would at orice have the stopper applied to his entry. But wfcilst "Truth" is, and has "been; doing all it can to keep alive the agitation against the immigration -cf. the detestable, e.vilrsmelldn'g, leprous alien, many allegedly respectable residents of New Zealand— and ■ this refers particularly to. Wellington—rare doing their best to make the • Cho\f Who is here "one of us." The ordin-ary-thinking citizen can see forjhinvseif what isi being done by certain wowsers if he will take the trouble to visit the Chinese mission m Taramakistreet on Sunday evening. Not only do white youn-g mien "attend f - the mission for the purpose of allesodly instructing, the Chow m the elcmen, tary rules of English,' but, during the mission services, it will be noted 'that some score of well-dressed white ■girls between the ages of sixteen and /twenty, :occupy seats on the same form as ihe Chow,, and mingle with; the 'lecherous Asiatic as freely as if they were Chows themselves. What the parents of these girls can be thinking of to allow their daughters to associate iwrith the scum of • ■th-o. earth, "Truth" does not know, but it is a reflection on the intelligence of these parents that they should thus ■ stand by and see their ers handed over to the leprous mr habitants ot Haining-street. It is this early association with a cancerous element of our civilisation which is H;he downfall of many of our girls, as familiarity with the Chow naturally decreases the abhorrence' of the ordinary individual until at last our sisters and daughters look upon the Chow as a brother, . with the inevitable result that the Chinkie makes of these maidens molls and Chinese consorts. The Chinaman instinctively hates and detests the White race as the ' White race hates and fears the Chinamun, and it is because of the White's apathy that the Yellow fiend is admitted to this ; county "Truth" trusts that the parents of the fourteen white girls who were present at the Chinese Mission .Church on , Sunday night last will take warning and see that their daughters are not again placed under the influence of the im-* moral Chows. The result might be a brood of 'half-breeds.
