A PENCHANT FOR BEER.
Elizabeth Malarky's Malady.
Elizabeth Bfalarky is a Christchurch resident, whose penchant for heer has nearly landed her m the inebriates' home for ■a period of two years. Her last* lapse from sobriety brought her under -the habitual drunkards' clause, and when charged with the offence before Magistrate Day, lawyer Leathern -pleaded for another chance m consideration of the" fact that the lydy hadn't been before the Court for a period of four months. A dry interval of such duration was unusual for Liz., whom counsel said was now leading a reputable life. Her husband had been away from her for five or six years, and she was instituting proceedings to secure a divorce. As soon as the law permitted, she expected 'to marry a very respectable individual, a widower with two children, now toiling a$ the Addington workshops. Counsel ' .'■ ' » WOVE .A PLEASANT BOMANCE
around Elizabeth, and pictured the shattered lives that would accrue were the cruel law to take its course. Magistrate Day "admonished ithe lady, emphasising the unpleasantness of two years' retirement m one of ourbeerless institutions. He entered a conviction , and ordered the woman . to come up for sentence when called upon. Another charge crediting Mrs; Malarky" witltf the fracture of her prohibition order was treated similarly,- Elizabeth explaining that she was feeling sick at the time and a relative gave her some of that "liquid which Timothy says is hosker for the stomach's sake.
