SWIFTS— RAMBLERS.
Swifts v. Ramblers at the' Basin Re* serve produced some very Rood ?nd exciting play. The score is not a gon.-1 indication of the play, as had the Swifts made the same -use of their opportunities as the they would have secured a win. Swifts require a centre forward badly, aiafl could also do with an outside left — Renfrew seems unable to shoot. Ramblers deserved their win for the simple reason that their forwards put m some good shots and scored. Oldnall .(in goal for Ramblers) was vtrv clean, but had nothing difficult to stoo McLaren was easily the better of the two backs, but he is far too slow, and. >7ould not have much chance with a ■worrying forward against him. Edwards is too light to be a first rater, unless he can develop more triciiuesa and make less use of the line. Of the halves, Jackson stood out oh his own, and was easily the best on the ground, but has a tendency to dribble too much. . Ballingall (centre half) played a steady K<une, but did nothing exceptional. He is too slow. Coward fed Waters nicely. It is a hard matter to pick . out the best of the Ramblers' forwards. They combined nicely, except for an occasional selfish bit of play from Mouat. Waters is a fast dribbler, and can .also, shoot Mouat is a very hard man to rob of the ball, but he missed some chances m front of the goaL Anker was allowed too much latitude by the opposing centre half, who should have bumped him. Smallbone was only fair, but he scored Ramblers' first goal with a nice header. Saunders is fast and has a good command of the ball* his only weak point being inaccuracy m placing his centres. . Jamieson (m goal for Swifts) was very quick when he did get the ball, but suf-. fers from inexperience. Both Elson and Pye Smith seem to have profited by the hard things said about them m this column last week, as they did not go m for so much line play. Pye Smith was the better of the two. It was rather a pity that Tempest was too unwell to turn out on Saturday. His place was taken by White, who does not hustle enough for a centre half. Graves was as erratic as ever, but he received, a nasty knock soon after the game star-' ted, which may have put him off to some extent. The promoted junior, Kerschberp got m touch with his forwards, and showed good promise. Of the forwards Oilier and Scott were the best, and yet they are not playing up to form* Rodgers spoils himself by fiddling. It foovs pretty, but a shot is of far more ; service to your side. The less said about Renfrew the better, but perhaps lie could make ln>p»lf worth a place m a senior team if he shot with his instep instead of his toe. P- Pye Smith (also a junior) and brother of the full-back, played centre. He is fairly fast, Aut very awkward, and can't shoot worth a cass, if Saturday is any criterion. ' The game was a good one to watch..Some of* the Ramblers' combined rushes were brought to a good finish m front of the goal, and if they can only keep «roiag they should not be far out at the finish . How is this for the winner of the Senior League' V.M.C.A. 20 points Rovers 19 points, Diamonds 18 points', Swifts and Ramblers 17 noints. Wanderers, Petone, Thistle, m the order named.
