POSEIDON v. CARBINE.
"Warerley" comes at us with a cleancut query as to which was the superior three-year-old, Carbine or Poseidon. Of course, it is a difficult task to weigh the merits of two horses racing at different periods, but lin this case it appears as if Poseidon had much better claims to p«t forward than Musket's old son. In the first place, the real line for judging the best three-year-old is through the classic races, but as Carbine only took part m one classic race (the V.R.C. Derby) and was beaten, Poseidon is well ahead of him m that respect, as he won both Derbies and St. Legers. Poseidon also won the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, but Carbine ilid not start m these events as a three-year-old. However, he was a runner m the Australian Cup, and was defeated by Lochiel, therefore Poseidon is well ahead on Handicap form also. The real greatness of Carbine as a three-year-old rests entirely on his performances^ in w.f.a. races, m which be was invincible, but as Poseidon won ever-f w.f.a. event, except one, m which he started, be is barely behind Carbine m that respect. Taking it all through there seems very little between the two,, but his classic performances and Cud wins give Poseidon more claim to be considered the greater three-year-old. .
