MISERABLE MONTGOMERY.

Another Skeddaling Seducer Settled. In the early part of last year a youth of some nineteen or twenty summers, named Thomas Montgomery, who was then toiling for Sharland and Co., Ltd., made the acquaintance of a prepossessing damsel named Kathleen Jones, who lives at Hataitai. The dark-eyed Kathleen's charms enraptured Thomas, and the pair began to keep company. After about six months of billing and cooing, the ardent Tom stormed the fortress of the girl's virginity. Then his love began to cool. Last December he said he was going to Wanganui for the holidays, and, after swearing eternal fidelity, he departed. But the lecherous cad never returned. Soon after lie had gone Kathleen found that she was m for trouble, and then there was the usual weeping and wailing. The "multy" Montgomery wrote her a couple of letters containing admissions damaging to himself, but was not manly enough to come back and help the girl. So she instituted proceedings to compel him to make provision for the child when it .should be born. After some trouble,' the skunk was located at Wairoa, and the summons was served on him there. The case was heard by Mr Riddell, S.M., on Monday last, but THE COWARDLY MONTGOMERY failed to appear. The beak considered that the timorous Thomas's letters were sufficient corroboration. of the sorrowful Kate's stor*- and ordered that he find se*curity, himself m a bond of £50 and two sureties of £25 each, that he would make provision for the child, when born. The alternative was fixed at. two months m quod.
