, ■» . The financial difficulties of the firm of Elliott and Duncan havo formed the subject of much discussion m Wellington business circles for the past week- or two. Indeed, the ordinary casual street quid-nuic knew all about the smash and didn't even mention Duncan and Elliott's name with' bated breath. Anyhow, the rumors that floated round had very good basis, ami naturally the tangled affairs of the firm m question: were bound to find their way into the colurmys of the clean and respectable daily press, and by-tbe-bye, Wellington's clean and respectable daily press hasn't any particular pretenssions to. honesty. A sample of this journalistic dishonesty is provided by a par which was squeezed into the "Dominion" of Monday last, and the said paragraph is as follows '— There are substantially supported reports afloat respecting; difficulties involving a well-known city land and house agent. Rumor has it that there are unsecured liabilities amounting to several thousand pounds. "Truth" is not holding a brief for any city land and house agent when it declares that the "Dominion" is publishing such a pointed paragiaph was guilty of an act which cannot be described other than a piece of blackmail. If the substantially supported reports afloat were such as the "Dominion" allege, why did it not mention the particular agent. Why indeed ? The effect of that paragraph is to reflect on the moral character and integrity generally of every sound and . solvent land . agent m Wellington. If Elliot is the black sheep why did hot the "Dominion" say so. Is it to be taken from this little; and latest, act of dishonest journalism that the "Dominion"^ advertising canvasser hasn't been successful' m securing advts. from city land and house Is it also to be inferred that if any city house and land agent advertises m the "Dominion" he is to be absolved from the reflection that this paragraph has thrown oh the individual agents m Wellington It looks fishy to say the least of it.
