THE GAMING ACT.
Position of the Bookmakers. The extraordinary conditions under which the committee of the Manawatu Racing Club is prepared to issue licenses to bookmakers wishing to do business at the forthcoming meet- ' ing has caused considerable comment m local circles, and the opinion is being freely expressed that if all clubs act m a similar manner, the Act will be rendered hull and void. The local bookmakers are disgusted with the turn of ' events, and during the week several meetings -have been held by them, and some very plain speech has" beep, indulged in,' and curses have teen -hurled- at the Government. \ It is intended to hold a monster meeting m the Town Hall early mi January to protest against the action of the Racing Clubs, and calling on the Government to redress the bookmakers' grievances. Several champions pf the metallicians will be asked to address the meeting, and no effort will be spared to make it a thoroughly representative one. An Association will probably be formed for the Drotection of the sportloving community. and this body T/ill endeavor to maJrc its presence felt at the next general election.
