THE C.J.C. MEETING.
N.Z. Cup To-Day. Anticipations. A splendid acceptance of sixteen has been received for the N.Z. Cup; which will be run at Riccarton today. The defections are Seaman, St : . Joe, Waitapu and Outlander. Most of the candidates have come through the ordeal of their winding-up gallops m a satisfactory manner, so well indeed that most of the cfuid" nuncs confess that they are m. a Quandary and the noting is very divided. . M-aniapoto has done nothing of note on the tracks, sol will leave him out, but Master Delaval has done everything that his trainer has asked of him, and as he is such a good stayer I will select him as a placed horse. Zimmerman has un-sightly-looking front legs and they might be stinging him before the two miles is encompassed. Paritutu should run well, but may be lacking m brilliancy. Armistice is very m ami out. Mahuta is a very solid colt, and his trainer McGrath thinks he is sure to win. Grand Slam Ido not like, and it might be a bit too hard for Qazeley. This brings me to Apa. A very solid horse, but very unlucky. He was not quite right here md Tilley reckoned he would im prove a great deal. Were Jenkins on his back he would start favorite, but if he wins now he will pay £6 on the machine. Elevation has been whispered about as unsound, but Mr Bidwcll informed me that he was as well as he could be. If he is himself he will win, as the trial he did at Hastings would win the N.Z. Cup every year. I sincerely trust that Farmer has the colt m the best of condition and then v*e will .see what 1 liis host form is. Bucclcuch is ;<o- : inp; wt-11. hut the distance Will find j him out Frisco has always been a ' £ood colt, and he aaa.y create a sui;-
prise this year. Probable, Lapland, Astrakhan and Saga I will not have as winners of a two-mile race. To sum up the situation, I would selectElevation. , Master Delaval. : . Mahuta,; The next leg of the double is the Stewards' Handicap, and were Martello himself I would like no other for the winner. However, disquieting rumors are m circulation about him and it is stated that he will not see the posti ' Idealist I have a great lilting for and' will look to him to pass the post first, with Gold Crest and Lord Sonlt next. HURDLES.— Sen Sim or Asteroid. I MAIDEN PLATE.— Dawn. WELCOME STAKES.— Arm-let or Pleetfoot. RICCARTON WELTE-R.—Swim-ming Belt. LADIES' PURSE.— the Rand. SHORTS'. HANDICAP .-De Witte On Monday the Derby Stakes will be decided. Gold Crest and Elevation should score.
