THE N.Z. CUP.

Candidates Chances. Next .Saturday the Summer meeting of the C.J.C. will commence at Riccai-ton, and on that day. the New Zealand Cup will be decided. All of the acceptors, except Probable . and Mahuta have been seen out quite recently i and it is intended to sum up their chances m this article. ; , The. top^weightj Maniapoto, 9.6; had a run at Wangatitri and at Trentham; At the former place he appeared to be very sore, but at Trentham he had thrown it all off, and if he goes' on all right I look to him to win a race at Ricdarton". but not tlie "N.Z- "Cup.- During-the week he was backed to win a further thousand at 100 to 5. Master Delaval 8.9 has a good chance, and his. party are very confident and have' put their money m by the cwt';'- He had a riiri at Hastings, and was a trifle too . big there, but has come on wonderfully, arid his gallop on Sunday' morning was a;.real humtaer. When Halbedier won " the N.Z. Cup he galloped 1£ miles m 2 mm llsec and won the big race very easily. I must count on Master Delaval, as he is an out and out stayer, and that gallop shows that he is well. Armistice 8.3 looks to have gone off since Wanganui, as she was not placed m her Hastings or' Napier Park engagements. Such a genuine stayer as the Mahaki mare must have ah undeniable chance if she comes on at all during the next week. Zimmerman 8.3 is the elect of a very powerful stable, which, however, may be weak m stayers. He had a run at Hastings, and finished, well forward, but there is just a suspicion of unso.undness about him, so I will let him run against me. Paritutu 8.3 is galloping as well as ever he was m his life, and it looks 10 to 1 on him finishing amongst the placed division. In the past he has always accomplished anything on the track, but failed m his races- However, I-think the racing over fences he has had should give him courage, and I expect him to fight out every yard of the way. He

is sure to be one of my finals on next ! Saturday. Grand Slam, 7.11, went South on Tuesday night. His owner is very confident of the chestnut's ability, but he will find one or two of them; very hard nuts to crack. Mahuta 7,11 has yet to demonstrate his ability to stay a distance. In the .Thompson. Handicap he only suffered defeat by a head, but on the ! next day, over 1\ miles, he was badly beaten but he was not himself, and no notice need be taken of that performance. Since then he- has only been raced over sprint distances, so I am quite m the dark about him, but till I have seen him fail over a distance he will be one of my .selections. . Apa 7.8, St. 'Joe 7.8, and Frisco 7.2 will all run, and tne money would suggest that the former is the best. He will take a power of beating- and was the most unlucky horse racing last, season, and with' any luck at ail should have landed one of the many Cups he ran second m. St. Joe will probably be sent . to the front to make the pace for Apa, and a like task will be be apportioned Frisco, but look out that the latter does not 1 go to the front and stop there, as m my opinion he is one of. the best stayers seen out this season ... . Elevation 7.6 ' occupies the position of first favorite, and, being a good three-year-old, must be hard to beat. If they are good, three*year-olds have all - the be.st-r.pf it : |n- the > i N.Z; Cup, atid this colt,, though he failed m the Hawke's Bay .Guineas, has accomplished some wonderful "trials m private. . After Hastings and before Napier Park he rah I£. miles on the outside of the course proper at Has^ tings m 2min 9sec. He was well shod, carried 8.0, and left- Mystification, Grand Slam., and Chatterer a, long way behind. .One of the best judges of the game that I know, told me.it was the best gallop that;' he had ever witnessed, and that all going well the N.Z. Cup was .all over. Mr Bidweil's colt is .trained by J. Farmer* who has had a fair amount of experience, but I trust that he will ."hot "get. anxious and overdo the colt, j His success would be Very popularVag 'the colt has all : along beeft a favorite "vvith the public. ..._•■. : . Seaman 7^G was not himself '.at At one time his trainer thought that he had hold of another Melwood m the plain-looking son of Sylvia Park." We will, know to^ay if he is to go South. • Buccleuch 7.4 has : , not incurred a penalty by his success at Oamaru; The .lot he defeated. there did not conrfain anything any good for a N.Z; Cup line, so this grand-looking: son of Benzoin has not done anything won- j clerful m public to .suggest his., success m the Cup. His trainer, , W. Pine, is very confident that he will win', and has, as was reported m I these columns some weeks ago, supported him with Fireiron for a good siim. This, of course, does not make him win. , Gazeley 7. 1 10 incurred a penalty by his' success at Wellington. When the chestnut horse is all right he can gallop some, but the hard tracks are against him. Probable 7.0 has not had- a run m public since the C.J.C. G.N. meeting, but reports are m circular tion that he is going wonderfully welt on the tracks. Should Seaman not start, Or. Price will have the mount on Mr Palmer's horse. . . Lapland 6.13 has done nothing _t.o : recommend him to backers for the.. N.Z. Cup. He failed at Oamaru, and I am afraid he will do so at Riccarton. Waitapu 6.12 is very m and out. He runs well at times, and very bad at other times. His last public appearance was at Otaki, when he failed signally the first . day and won just as easy on the second day. I cannot advise backers to be with him. Astrakhan 6.13 has won a good race at Dunedin, but the class he beat was not very ; good. He lias an outsider's chance only., Outlander 6.7 and Saga 6.7 are the two bottom weights and just the two that I was surprised to see pay up. They are both owned by good •sports, who. like to see their colors on a racecourse, but their chance of success must be very remote.
