BENEVOLENT BOWRON.
Who Gave Gallop the Half-dollar? Great is philantrophy. Look' at the "Yjankee geezers who • don't know what to do with their money, and are spending it m second-hand books and what-not, instead of doling it out to the starving workers who made Ifcheir gonce for them. And look at George Bowron, of Bowron Bros., of ' Christchurch, who actually dared to ! write a cheqxie for £250 to give to' the Young Men's Christian Cadgers' Association. Well, what of it ? Can't' he afford it ? More power to his pen ; may his ink always be of the kind that won't fade. But, say ! Was it the same G. Bowron who gave just half-a-crown to the Gallop Fund a few days afterwards ? And wasn't his name m the daily rags as bleing, the person who contributed that munificent amount ? Also, is it the same G. Bowron who told the collector for the tfallop Fund that Bowron Bros., of Woolston, wasn't a damned charity or philantrophic concern ? "Truth" would like very much to know if these two G. Bowrons— the two-fifty quid gent, and the halfcrown josser— are identical. "Truth" understands that they are, but absolutely refuses to believe it. That's positively straight. And is it true that the half-crown josser (not the two-fifty gent.) threw the half-crown down as a man would 1 THROW A BONE TO A' DOG ? Hadn't he any smaller change on Brim. Why did he part with a whole half-crown, which possibly represented his day's beer, or ginger-beer money ? No wonder he felt wild. A man doesn't like to be deprived of his refreshment cash m such a brigandish fashion. It was positively audacious. However, the G. Bowron who gave the two-fifty quid didn't seem to mind 'being fleeced by crackbrained cadgers who want a place lo play cards m on winter nights. Not ' l t>wo-up," mind you, but just plain unmarked cards at a shilling a pack. But to get back to . Gallop. He had been working for Boworon Bros, at Woolston for ten solid years (so "Truth's" representative was informed), and a collection has been taken up for his family from .Christchurch to >Lyttelton.
